The Singapore Theory
By Steven Sztabor
This bit of phraseology seems to have been coined by Barry Fitzgerald, presently of GHI, during one of their past episodes. My reasoning being that any reference to the origin of the name simply cannot be found anywhere. It is an obscure theory to begin with and the title simply seems to have been adopted by those in the paranormal field.
How many field investigators know of this theory? Well your guess is as good as any, due to the fact that it doesn’t seem to be widely used because of it’s unreliability, and it’s unpredictability. ( I’ll elaborate on this later in the article )
Known for some time as the Theory of Familiarization and /or Paranormal Stimuli, this method of enticement uses outside influences such as music, movies, a voice speaking in their native tongue, or even dressing the part as an elaborate ruse to coercethe alleged haunter into revealing itself through interaction with the stimulus placed within the investigative environment. Photographs, furniture, jewelry, and personal items once belonging to your “ghost” are also suggested and encouraged.
But, keep in mind that this is only a theory, a hypothesis, so don’t read more into it than you have to. It is simply a mechanism to re-create a situation which maybe familiar to a spirit, entity, or memory and allow it to feel more comfortable in it’s surroundings.
Now here’s where we get into the unreliable and unpredictable aspects of this practice. Unless you have an actual artifact belonging to your “ghost “you have no idea what place in time this person or persons lived. All your preparation could end up resulting in little to no activity because you chose the wrong time period. Another thing to remember is do we have a grounded entity or is it just in visitation as this will affect the level of activity, if any. Remember just because you’re playing Big Band Music in an old U.S.O hall or roaring 20’s music in an old speakeasy doesn’t mean that the “spirit” necessarily liked that kind of music and could be driven away or into hiding. Thus the unreliable factor.
Let’s look at the unpredictability of this theory. Say you’ve done your homework and you have all the ingredients needed to proceed with the experiment. Next step, you begin. But what if what you’re doing invokes bad memories, even sadness or anger in the “energy’ you’ve tried to make comfortable. Result! Possibly more activity than you expected, or can handle. We are all still gathering data on this theory to see if it’s viable or not. But remember, having a pissed off “ghost” on your hands is not a pretty sight to behold………….or is it??
